In a career spanning more than 30 years, Jim Smith has worked as a newspaper editor, legislative assistant, not-for-profit executive, media relations manager for a large teaching hospital, college professor, senior internal communications consultant at a Fortune 500 corporation, and manager with marketing communications firms on both coasts of the United States.

This two-pronged and often complementary practice generates a wealth of feature article and marketing communications assignments that afford him opportunities to constantly learn, stay fresh, and write about interesting people and exciting research trends. While his academic feature writing has covered an extremely diverse scope of academic interests, many stories have focused on science and technology. Recent articles have covered such diverse subjects as advanced stem cell research; “sprawl” and open space preservation; innovative technologies for capturing untapped energy in pressurized pipe systems; emerging therapies to counter memory loss; biofilm management and remediation; MEMS and nanotechnology; cutting-edge TomoTherapy treatment for cancer; fuel cell development; adoption of Six Sigma techniques for improvement of public schools; remote systems management and construction techniques for sustainable development.

“Jim Smith has contributed many feature stories to the Trinity College alumni magazine since 2002. His writing style is both clear and imaginative, and he consistently turns in work that requires a minimum of editorial attention. Jim can be counted on to make even the most arcane subject matter accessible and interesting to the general reader. His professionalism is impeccable – he provides regular progress reports on his work and reliably meets deadlines. Jim is a pleasure to work with.”
