Book Writing

“Researching and writing a book is an immensely gratifying process,” says Jim Smith. “A book affords the space to really dig into an idea. For each of the books I’ve written there was a specific client. Most were celebrating an important milestone, such as a 100th anniversary.

“I love digging through companies' archives, interviewing longtime employees and gradually pulling together disparate threads and capturing a sense of history that is rich and nuanced. What inevitably emerges from the research is a compelling tale about real people and the challenges they dealt with over a span of years and how they rose above those challenges.”

Since publication of his first book, Greater Hartford: Celebrating Cultural Diversity, in 1996, Jim has written five corporate histories, all published by Greenwich Publishing Group. They are Wiremold: A Century of Solutions; A Century of Caring: The Story of Greenwich Hospital; Stainless Determination: The History of Sandmeyer Steel Company; Snowing in Chicago: The Story of a Fortunate Detour and the Founding of Cook Incorporated; and “Work Well Done”: The 100-Year Story of P.C. Richard & Son. Each has been a success for the company it profiled.

“Greenwich Publishing Group has been great to work with,” says Jim. “They have great respect for both their clients and their writers. They really understand the power of storytelling and its utility as a device for interpreting a company’s enduring values and points of distinction.”

“Jim Smith is one of our best authors. In addition to understanding and consistently delivering the unique blend of journalistic storytelling, history writing and subtle advocacy required for a sponsored corporate history book, Jim has an eye for the detail, color and human moments that make business stories come alive, with warmth. Jim's writing speaks to the heart as well as to the mind.”
